Disorient’s COMPRESSOR VI – Re-envisioning Metropolis

Live Video Projections including live filter effects and pre-edited content – Paul Clay

Saturday, July 17, 2010 at 10:00pm till Sunday, July 18, 2010 at 6:00am
Times Square Arts Center, 669 8th Avenue, New York, NY

Compressor is DISORIENT’s annual ignition of the collective rocket that drives our community to the playa. It’s a chance to premiere the latest art and performances that will define us in the Black Rock Desert.

This year’s theme will focus on reclaiming the future of metropolis through high-tech interactive art and parables of sustainability in the heart of our metropolis. How do the denizens of metropolis reinvent their environment in a far away land? How does word for the future from the past square with the actual future? What then do we learn about our own future metropolis?

Costume ideas include future-retro to future-techno, cyber-tribal to nouveau-formal, Nikola Tesla to Fritz Lang and anything else that captures the essence of Re-envisioning Metropolis.

Prsented at the Filmore New York at Irving Plaza. Bringing South Asian beats and culture to western dance floors across America since the 80s and 90s, DJ Rekha continues to make waves on the music scene and remains true to her mission of representing the South Asian culture and showcasing Bhangra beats to the world.

The DJ, who has been featured on reputable networks such as CNN, created a major buzz in 1997 with her conception of the Basement Bhangra party series! This party series merges traditional Bhangra music with latest hip-hop beats. This Thursday the DJ will celebrate 13 years of this famous event with a line-up of popular artists.

Ten years after the conception of Basement Bhangra, DJ Rekha released an album using the name Basement Bhangra again, for fans to party to at home. Up until this day, the first Thursday of every month is dedicated to a banging Basement Bhangra party at NYC’s venue Sounds of Brazil.

2009 Pre Obama Inauguration benefit for the not-for-profit Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, at Eyebar, 1716 Eye Street NE, Washington DC.A well-known humanitarian, Mr. Mutombo started the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation to improve living conditions in his native Democratic Republic of Congo. In 1997, Mutombo with the Mutombo Foundation began plans to open a $29 million, 300-bed hospital on the outskirts of his hometown, the Congolese capital of Kinshasa. The project has been on the whole very well received at all social and economic levels in Kinshasa.

On August 14, 2006, Dikembe donated $15 million to the completion of the hospital for its ceremonial opening on September 2, 2006. The hospital was by then named Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital, named for his late mother, who died of a stroke in 1997. When it opened in February 2007, the $29 million facility became the first modern medical facility to be built in that area in nearly 40 years.

Basement Bhangra 10 Year Anniversary

Live Video Projections Including Live Filter Effects and Pre-Created Content

At the Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC. With The Dhol Foundation, Bikram Singh, Panjabi MC, DJ Rekha and more Most club events in the city are shorter-lived than mayflies. But the dance party known as Basement Bhangra seems to have the shelf life of Twinkies. It just goes on and on.

Basement Bhangra – which normally fills S.O.B.’s on Wednesdays with its patented fusion of South-Asian, hip hop and dance music – will celebrate its 10th anniversary tonight. It will do so in a space four times its normal capacity: Hammerstein Ballroom (34th St. between Seventh and Eighth). The basic bhangra style has roots in percussive folk music from the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. But it didn’t find a modern voice until the 1980s, when British kids of Punjabi descent began mixing the thwacking tabla sound with elements of house, soul and rap.

You Are Here

Diesel Denim Commissioned Art Installation & Set of Performances

You Are Here – architecture, retail, and locality:  an art installation and live audio/video performance curated by Sebastien Agneessens of Formavision, contemplating the neighborhood of SoHo and the nature of shopping and retail design, created for the Diesel Denim Gallery, a clothing store where 70% of the space is devoted to the presentation of art, and which is located in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City.

Shopping can be a disorienting experience when we are offered so many possibilities regarding place, design, and personal style. Have we found the right place to fulfill our dreams? Where are we in local, architectural, geographical, virtual, and cultural terms when we are wandering around in Soho, shopping? The project gathers the mediatic traces, then lays it all out for you.
