In Water I’m Weightless

Set, lighting, Costume, & Video Projections Design

Produced by National Theatre Wales, and presented at the Millennium Centre, Cardiff, and at the Southbank Centre, London.
Written by Kaite O’Reilly, directed by John McGrath, Movement Director Nigel Charnock, Associate Choreographer Catherine Bennett.

An Unlimited commission for the Cultural Olympiad and London 2012 Festival.

Cast: Mat Fraser, Karina Jones, Nick Phillips, Sophie Stone, David Toole, and Mandy Colleran (sidelined by injury.)

Special thanks to Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham, and Michael Prickett for additional video footage.

In Water I’m Weightless is based on a series of monologues by Kaite O’Reilly, which were inspired by the imagination, experience and attitudes of disabled people across the UK. The show takes a provocative look at the body, and is performed by a cast of six outstanding Deaf and disabled performers.

The poetic, poignant, and at times explosively funny texts explore the endless possibilities of human difference.

Video Composite of the Penultimate Scene

Video Design for the penultimate scene of the show. From a 4K resolution video composite indicating the video mapping across ten large spheres suspended above the stage and a screen across the back wall. (Note, the soundscape in the background is just for indication and is not the final music ultimately used in the production.)

This scene seeks to give voice to, or to evoke, the title of the work. The cast are seen seated, live on-stage, and at the same time are all seen on video, leaping into the air in slow motion, and then crossfading into the ocean, a place of immense natural forces and awesome beauty.
